Sunbird 3000

Sunbird 3000 is Fuji Electric's three-phase solar hybrid inverter, built as a true bi-directional PCU (Power Conditioning Unit) that combines solar charging, grid interaction, and battery backup in one modular unit. Spanning 10 KW to 400 KW, it uses multiple 32-bit DSP controllers with Space Vector Modulation for switching control, and its MPPT charge controller uses incremental conductance algorithms to track the solar array's maximum power point through an IGBT-based, PWM-switched charger. Because it's a true bi-directional design with battery-independent operation, Sunbird 3000 can run as a solar inverter even without batteries connected, while still supporting full grid-assisted battery charging (up to 100%) and a selectable grid/battery priority feature when batteries are present. Its modular internal construction is built specifically to reduce MTTR (mean time to repair), and it carries an inbuilt isolation transformer for galvanic isolation between the solar array/battery side and the grid.

True Bi-Directional, Battery-Independent Solar Inverter

  • Functions as a solar inverter even without a battery connected , solar power can be exported or consumed directly without requiring battery storage in the system.
  • When batteries are present, battery charging through the grid is supported up to 100%, and a selectable priority feature lets the system be configured to draw preferentially from grid or battery.
  • Higher array voltage capacity is optionally available for sites with larger or higher-voltage PV strings.

MPPT Charging Built on Incremental Conductance

  • MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) is achieved through incremental conductance algorithms, which track the array's actual power curve rather than relying on simpler voltage-sweep methods , relevant for maintaining harvest efficiency under partial shading or rapidly changing irradiance.
  • The charge controller uses an IGBT device with PWM switching based on Space Vector technology, matching the same switching philosophy used on the inverter side.

Modular Construction for Faster Repair

  • Modular internal construction is specifically called out as giving higher MTTR , meaning a fault in one module can be diagnosed and swapped without taking down the whole unit or requiring a full rebuild.
  • Multiple 32-bit DSP controllers distribute control functions rather than relying on a single processor for the entire unit.

Grid-Interactive Power Quality Features

  • PF (power factor) correction while operating on mains/grid supply (line-interactive mode).
  • Active filtering when load is on mains, with harmonic correction capability at 100% load , THDi under 5%, power factor above 0.9, and harmonic attenuation ratio up to 96%.
  • Output voltage distortion under 2% with 100% linear load, and voltage regulation held to ±2% across 3-phase, 4-wire, 50Hz output.

Built for Reliability and Serviceability

  • DC fan design for lower power consumption during cooling.
  • Variable fan speed increases reliability and results in less dust suction into the cabinet compared to a fixed-speed fan running continuously at full speed.
  • Inbuilt isolation transformer provides galvanic isolation at the inverter output, protecting connected equipment from DC injection and improving fault isolation.
  • 128 x 64 graphics display (LCD with mimic) shows array/battery/grid voltage, current, and power; output voltage, current, and inverter heat-sink temperature; and power statistics (grid kWh, PV kWh, output kWh, battery charge/discharge).

Comprehensive Protection and Diagnostics

  • Under/over-voltage protection across input, output, array, and battery, plus array and battery reverse-polarity protection.
  • Output overload and short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, and MCCB protection on input, output, array, and battery paths.
  • Surge protection for both grid and array connections, plus wound-component over-temperature protection.
  • Built-in alarm log (240 entries) and data log (268 entries), expandable to lifetime data logging via SD card.
  • Remote monitoring and communication via Ethernet (RJ45), RS232, or RMS with GPRS.

Applications

  • Commercial and industrial rooftop/ground-mount solar with backup – battery-independent operation means the same unit works whether the site starts with solar-only or adds battery storage later.
  • Sites needing grid power-quality correction alongside solar – PF correction and active harmonic filtering while on mains supply make Sunbird 3000 useful even during periods when solar generation is low.
  • Facilities requiring fast fault recovery – the modular design's higher MTTR characteristic suits critical or continuously-operating loads where downtime for repair needs to be minimized.
  • Larger-capacity installations – the 10–400 KW range, with optionally higher array voltage capacity, scales from a single-building system to a larger industrial or facility-wide solar-hybrid installation.
